More than 100 people celebrated the opening of Jamestrong Packaging's latest investment in the New Zealand manufacturing sector, a high-tech infant formula can production facility in Hornby, Christchurch.

Alex Commins, MD & CEO Jamestrong ANZ said the Hornby factory is the second of three infant formula can production plants Jamestrong is developing - one in Victoria, Australia, and the other is being built in Auckland, New Zealand, with cans due to roll off the line in early 2019. "More than 20 million babies are born each year in China," said Mr Commins. "Producing 60 million infant formula cans per year, the new Hornby facility will contribute to New Zealand's reputation as a global leader in dairy exports and provide jobs for local workers."

Synlait, with its customer A2 milk, will be the core customer of the new Hornby can production plant with Oceania Dairy, NZ Dairy Collaborative and Pure Nutrition also key customers of the new cannery. "It is imperative the canning facilities are near the raw product and associated services," Mr Commins said. "Christchurch is ideally located, close to NZ dairy producers and processors.

In 2015 Jamestrong's owner the Shanghai Yuanlong Investment Company purchased the metal packaging business in Australia and New Zealand formerly owned by Ardagh Group. The shareholders of Shanghai Yuanlong led by Mr James Zhou and his associates started their foray into the can making world in China back in 1995. In that relatively short space of time they have grown to be the largest can-maker in China. Listed on the Shenzhen stock exchange and producing around nine billion cans per year in the Chinese market.

"Upon their entry into the Australian/NZ metal packaging market in 2015 in collaboration with the local management team Shanghai Yuanlong quickly understood and invested in an infant nutrition can manufacturing vision," Mr Commins said. "In the short space of time in Australia and New Zealand, Shanghai Yuanlong has supported the investment and commissioning in 2016 of a $13 million state-of-the-art KBA Metal star printing press based in Milperra, New South Wales to deliver the highest quality decorated tinplate in the ANZ marketplace, by far.

"A further $12 million investment in 2016 saw the commissioning of the first high-care facility for infant formula can manufacture at our Australian site in Kyabram, Victoria," he concluded.
